Dec 19 - God's Surprises

“Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.” (Psalm 125:1)

”He said to Abraham, ‘through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.” (Acts 3:25)

”But many who heard the message believed;…” (Acts 4:4)

In today's world, there is comfort in knowing that our God and our trust in Him cannot be shaken. During this Advent season as we anticipate the coming of the Christ child, we have to look beyond the manger to see that God, who loved us enough to send Jesus as the promised blessing to Abraham, can enter our lives in ways that surprise us. Just as Abraham's faith was in a forever-enduring God, so our faith is in a God who never fails to surprise us when we least expect it. Jesus' birth was one of those surprises, but when we look for them through the eyes of faith, God constantly surprises us with our own blessings. Advent is about anticipation and faith of things unseen. The same God who surprised Bethlehem with the birth of Jesus can reach into our world in ways that change us forever. He can take a negative experience and turn it into a positive transformation. He can take a small blessing and turn it into an unexpected joy. Even though Peter and John were carted off to jail, "…many who heard the message believed." During this season may we as individuals, and as a church, look forward in expectancy to the surprises God has in store for us.

Forever-enduring God, give us eyes to see, faith to believe, and willingness to receive and be a blessing that can change our world. Amen.

During this season of Advent, I am most looking forward to the surprises God has for us as we begin the next phase of our journey with a new pastor, a new enthusiasm, and a new sense of community.
