“Children are a gift from the Lord” Psalm 127:3
Preschool Ministry (Babies-Kindergarten)
At First Baptist, we celebrate the uniqueness of each child and are dedicated to partnering with parents in raising their children in the Christian faith. Our preschool ministry seeks to help parents lay a foundation for the spiritual, emotional, and physical growth of their child. We seek to provide a safe and healthy environment of loving care and a teaching program that is appropriate for the development level of each child.
Our preschool ministries include Sunday School, Missions Education, and Choirs to help our preschoolers grow in their faith.
Our preschool environment is designed to teach preschoolers developmentally with theologically sound curriculum thru hands on learning centers, as well as in small and large group times. Preschoolers are placed in classes according to their birth date as of Jefferson County public school promotion regulations. We promote to the next age class each August. However, babies and creepers are moved based on their development to the best of our ability.
While their parents are in worship, our preschoolers are receiving loving care and hearing Bible truths and thoughts during Extended Teaching Care (ETC) offered during worship. Our ETC program is sustained by adults who volunteer throughout the year.
A Worship Education Series is offered in the fall for our rising Kindergarteners in conjunction with Parenting in the Pew series for their parents and other adults.
Mission Friends is Mission Education for preschoolers which offers preschoolers an introduction to Baptist missionaries around the world. Preschoolers learn about where missionaries live and work and about how they tell people about Jesus. Preschoolers also learn that they can help others and tell them about Jesus.
Throughout the year opportunities for parent education are offered and parenting resources are available through our children’s ministry office.
One way our community of faith seeks to support young families is by voicing their support through a Dedication of Life Service where parents bring their child before the congregation demonstrating their desire to raise their child in the faith. Each child receives a certificate of dedication and a Read to Me Bible designed for preschoolers.
In order to continue to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for our preschoolers, all our volunteers must pass a background check and adhere to our preschool policies of safety and security. Our Children’s Ministry handbook is currently under revision and once completed will be distributed to all families with children.
Care for preschoolers is provided during all church-wide functions which occasionally will require reservations.
And Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and others.” Luke 2:52
Children’s Ministry (Grades 1-6)
Our ministry for children in grades 1-6 seeks to continue to lay biblical foundations in our children’s lives to prepare them to follow Christ.
On Sunday’s, Sunday School is offered at 9:30 a.m. to provide age graded Bible study opportunities where Bible knowledge and skills continue to develop thru large and small group activities using developmentally appropriate and theologically sound curriculum.
Children may attend worship with their families. A “children’s moment” as well as children's worship bulletins are provided to assist children as they participate in the worship service with their community of faith.
In addition to Sunday School, throughout the school year, we offer Wednesday night programming that includes Missions Education as they learn more about missions and the work of missionaries around the world, giving to missions and praying for the missionaries. Highlights of the year include hands-on mission projects to benefit Appalachian Outreach and the Pinewood Derby when families cheer on their favorite racers.
There is also a Children’s Choir program offered thru our music ministry.
During the summer months our children’s activities include Vacation Bible School and PassportKids! Camp.
Other Special Activities
Other special activities and fellowship times include Parent’s Night Out.
Supporting parents in their journey as the spiritual leaders in their home is an important part of our children’s ministry. Programs are planned throughout the year that offer educational support and as well as fellowship for parents. As the Holy Spirit works in the lives of the children, discipleship and counseling times are planned for both the parents and the children and further discipleship activities are offered to deepen their understanding of what it means to be followers of Christ.
In order to continue to provide a safe and healthy environment, our Children’s Ministry handbook is currently under revision and once completed will be distributed to all families with children.
